We had this super exciting trial we had to do! We were pretending to be in court, and I was defending my client. I was his press agent. And surprisingly enough, we won! I decided to put this in my portfolio because I had a really fun time doing the trial, and it was the first time I've ever been to court- or at least "fake" court. :D
I learned how the whole system worked. I was the press agent, which helped my client by asking questions to our witnesses, making my client look good. I truly enjoyed this project, and want to do something like this in the future again!

To the right is my Upton Sinclair speech. He was an author, who wrote books to help workers get better working conditions and pay. |

This is the position paper that I wrote for social studies. Every student in the class got partnered up, and received a country. We researched about the issue of human trafficking and child labor. I got the United States, and the issue I focused on was human trafficking. Here is my position paper that I wrote.
Human Trafficking in the United States
Being a victim of modern day human trafficking is like being a slave on a plantation back in the eighteen hundreds- maybe even worse. Barack Obama, the strong and caring president of the United States once said, “Our fight against human trafficking is one of the great human rights causes of our time...the change we seek will not come easy, but we can draw strength from the movements of the past.” Human trafficking is one of the largest ordeals the United States continuously faces throughout the years. As Obama states in the quote, he feels that it might not be easy to currently prevent this situation, but we can change little by little from our past actions. It’s a start. While many complain about going to school tomorrow, victims of human trafficking are praying to go to school. The United States had so many people illegally travel into the United States, using fake ID’s, and false document papers. After the civil war from 1861 to 1865, America gained its freedom, and regions from all over the United States flourished. This was putting the United States in good shape. However, after many years, the economy started to gradually decrease. From 2004 to 2010, the economic levels had already dropped down to 8.8% and one of the reasons why was because of human trafficking.. In the year 2013, the number of migrants were 45,785,000. That made up 14.3% of the United States population. Too many people are getting trafficked to and from the United States.
Many people in the United States are trafficked out. An organization called the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) received 9,298 calls about human trafficking, which was a 259% increase of calls between the years 2008 and 2012. The shocking part was that it mainly came from the east part of the United States. Another example that proves that point is an anecdote about a young 26-year-old girl named Nade who was brought into the bloody world of Human Trafficking. When she heard about a job offer that payed $12 a day, she just couldn’t pass up that offer because of her need and desperation of money. However, she soon realized that it was a big mistake. She was not payed $12 a day, but only $2. Not only that, but she rarely got to sleep, but if we was lucky enough, she would sleep in the bathroom for no more than 3 hours. She had to cook for the family, clean the house, and watch over the children. Not only that, but she was never allowed to exit the house or go to school or even make friends. She had nothing. This anecdote based on a real victim’s life talks about the conditions people like Nade face as a victim of human trafficking. Each person faces these issues, and because of human trafficking, these victims won’t be able to enjoy the love and comfort others get everyday. Human trafficking is a major problem that more people need to acknowledge and fix.
The United States has been attempting to protect people from becoming victims of human trafficking. The human trafficking rates have decreased over the years. In the years of 2001, and 2002, the estimated worldwide trafficking was 700,000, but in 2004, the population decreased to a range of 600,000 to 700,000. An organization called Trafficking in Persons Report, tracks the amount of people who get trafficked to and from places. They estimated that 14,500 to 17,500 people were trafficked to and from the United States. That is not a lot of people compared to previous years. Also, the United States built many solid programs and organization to help the problem of human trafficking in the United States. An organization called Anti-slavery International works at international, national, and local levels to eliminate all forms of human trafficking around the world. For example, in Uzbekistan, they’re currently putting on a campaign so they can get help from others too. They try to solve problems like human trafficking. The United States has made laws to try to prevent human trafficking. In the year 2007, the United States passed the Legislation Criminalizing Human Trafficking law, and spent approximately $23 million on domestic programs to help combat human trafficking. The percentage of victims decreased after the law was passed. However, despite the dauntless attempts the United States has been doing, the country still strives to eliminate human trafficking, but financial issues stands in the way. The economy in the United States is not constant. In some areas, specifically the east, is not doing as well as the other part of the United States, so that’s why human trafficking is mainly happening in that part of the United States. The economy is not consistent, which is leading only to disaster.
A possible solution to ending human trafficking is getting the government involved. In 2002, the Trafficking Victims Act was signed, and then passed into the law. This was one way the government stopped human trafficking in the United States. Also, by the end of 2007, they passed the Human Trafficking Victims Act, which we later found a difference. Although the government can enforce laws, many people won’t follow them. Since human trafficking started because of economic issues, people won’t follow these laws since they’re only in for the money. After the acts had been passed, there was only about a 1% decrease in the problem. Human trafficking increased by 500%, and that 1% is nothing compared to it. Having the government get involved with applying laws won’t work because people will only ignore them because of the money they get.
The United States believes that to eliminate human trafficking, the government should place higher protection/security to enforce the laws. The United Nations must create laws so that the U.S government can pass it, or even elaborate on the law. If no laws are created, then the issue of human trafficking will just get out of hand. By creating laws, they will make sure to protect people from becoming victims of human trafficking. The United States has continuously tried to create laws, but they weren’t strong enough. There were no enforcements to back the law up, and the law itself was quite weak. This led to people ignoring them, and breaking them too. The United Nations need to make the laws so that human trafficking can be controlled by making the U.S government enforce the laws, which will solve the problem of human trafficking.
